Music game for the classroom

Questions from teachers about the music game

The questions we hear most from teachers and ICT coordinators, with short answers. For details on privacy, read the privacy policy too.

Free to try. The teacher who starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Pupils need no account: they join with a code or QR in their browser.

The game runs in a browser. The teacher hosts on one screen and pupils join on theirs with a code, so the school needs no installation and no pupil accounts.

If your school has strict rules on devices or websites, ask your ICT coordinator to allow the site first. The list of questions below covers what they usually ask.

Teacher quick start

  1. 1

Open a room on the big screen

Go to the host page on your smartboard, projector or teacher laptop, pick a deck and a game, and a room code and QR code appear.

  2. 2

    Pupils join in their browser

Each pupil, or each pair, opens the page on a laptop, Chromebook, tablet or phone and types the code or scans the QR. They choose a nickname. Nothing to install.

  3. 3

    Play from the board

The song plays through the classroom speakers, pupils answer on their own screens, and the board shows the reveal and the scores.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. Pupils hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits. Every round is a small lesson in how music changed over the decades.

Which devices work

Any device with a browser

School laptops, Chromebooks, tablets and phones all work. Nothing is installed and nothing needs the school to approve software.

One per pupil or one per pair

Share a device between two pupils when the laptop cart is short or not everyone has a phone. Pairs also talk more about the answer.

Bring your own device

If your school allows pupils to use their own phones, they can join with the QR code. If it does not, use the school devices.

Tips for the classroom

Test the WiFi in the room

Everyone needs a stable connection. Try the game in the real room with the real number of devices.

Agree on nicknames

Explain the nickname rule before pupils join.

What is stored about pupils

Nicknames only

To join, a pupil types a code and a nickname. The room asks for nothing else: no real name, no email address, no account.

Rooms do not last

A room is deleted a short while after the game ends, together with the nicknames in it. Hitify does not keep pupil names in its database.

The teacher logs in

Only the teacher who starts the game logs in, with an email code. Read the privacy policy for the full details and check it against your school rules.

Frequently asked questions

Which devices can pupils use?

Any device with a modern browser: laptop, Chromebook, tablet or phone. You can share one device between two pupils.

Do we need to install anything on school devices?

No. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install or to approve.

How many pupils can play at once?

In the open modes there is no player limit, so a whole class or more can play. The turn-based Timeline is for small groups. For a very large group, test the WiFi first.

Are pupil names stored?

Pupils only enter a nickname. The room is deleted shortly after the game ends and Hitify does not keep the nicknames in its database. The teacher who hosts logs in with an email address.

Do pupils hear the songs on their own devices?

No. The music plays from the host screen, so pupils do not need headphones or sound on their own devices.

What does it cost?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first hundred cards of that deck are free. Pupils never pay or sign up.

Do pupils need an account?

No. Pupils join with a room code or QR code and pick a nickname. Only the teacher who starts the game logs in, with an email code and no password.

Ready for the first song?

Open a room on the board, let the class join and start the first round within a few minutes.
