Music game for your event

The pregame music game: one phone, five minutes

The taxi is in forty minutes and the playlist is on shuffle. Turn the wait into a game: one phone goes around, a song plays and everyone guesses the year.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

A pregame needs things that start fast and stop fast. You do not want to set up a TV when people are still putting on their shoes. One phone on the kitchen table is enough: a player hears 30 seconds of a song, places it on their timeline and passes the phone on.

Because turns are quick, the game follows the mood of the room. Play a few songs while people arrive, pause when the ride comes and continue another time with a fresh deck. A game with a low target of cards can end in fifteen minutes, long before anyone has to leave.

Best way to play it Pass the phone. Pass the phone is the pregame mode: there is no screen to connect and no code to enter, so the first song plays within a minute.

How a game works

  1. 1

    Pick a deck

Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.

  2. 2

    Choose how to play

Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.

  3. 3

    Listen and guess

A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.

  4. 4

    Reveal and score

Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

How to run it

Open the game on one phone

Go to the play page, log in with an email code and choose a public deck.

Add names and a small target

Give each player a name and set a low number of cards to win. That ends the game before the taxi arrives.

Hand it around

The phone goes to the next player after every song. Put it down in the middle so everyone hears.

Tips for a better game

Turn the volume up

The group hears the preview from the phone speaker. A small bluetooth speaker helps in a noisy kitchen.

Use the tokens

Each player starts with 2 tokens to steal a card or skip a song, which makes later rounds more tense.

Move to the party room at home

If the pregame is at your place, open a party room on the living room TV and everybody plays on their own phone.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can join?

Pass the phone takes 2 to 8 players. For more, open a party room, which takes up to 8 in Timeline and has no limit in Year Rush.

Do we need an account each?

No. Only whoever starts the game logs in, with an email code. Players just get a name.

What does it cost to play?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.

Do players need an account or an app?

No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.

Ready for the first song?

Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
