A music game for the bachelor or bachelorette party
In the car, at the Airbnb, on a boat or in a bar: one phone is enough. Pass it around and let the group argue about the year of every song.
Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.
The challenge at a bachelor or bachelorette party is the stretch between the planned activities, when twelve people have to be entertained in an apartment, a minibus or a restaurant before the next booking. A game on one phone fills that gap without any gear. The phone goes around, each player hears 30 seconds of a song and places it on their own timeline.
Because the game is about the whole group guessing, the guest of honour has no special role, but you can bring them in: pick a deck of songs from their teenage years or turn their favourite playlist into a deck. Everyone then plays on the music they grew up with, which suits an evening of stories.
Best way to play it Pass the phone. Pass the phone needs only one phone, which is what a weekend away calls for: no screen to set up, no code to enter.
How a game works
- 1
Pick a deck
Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.
- 2
Choose how to play
Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.
- 3
Listen and guess
A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.
- 4
Reveal and score
Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.
The timeline in one look
A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.
How to run it
Bring one phone with data
The previews stream online, so check the signal where you are staying or in the car.
Make a deck of the guest of honour
Turn their playlist into a deck. The first 100 cards of a deck you make are free.
Set a small target and let people join
A low number of cards to win keeps a game to a few songs, so it fits between activities.
Tips for a better game
Use the tokens for banter
Everyone starts with 2 tokens. Spend one to steal a card or skip a song, which gives the evening some friendly chaos.
Take it to the big screen later
For the evening in the rented house, open a party room on a TV and everybody plays on their own phone.
Agree a forfeit
Decide on a light-hearted rule for the loser before the first song. It is the group that makes the stakes.
Why it works at a party
No cards needed
Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.
Works in the browser
No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.
Three ways to play
One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work for a group of 15?
Pass the phone takes 2 to 8 players. For 15 people, split into two phones or open a Year Rush room, which has no player limit.
Can we play without a TV?
Yes. Pass the phone needs only the phone. For the party room modes you need a big screen with a browser.
What does it cost to play?
Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.
Do players need an account or an app?
No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.
Ready for the first song?
Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
