Music game for the occasion

A music game for New Year's Eve

The hours before midnight need something to do other than checking the clock. A game with short rounds and a podium at the end fills the gap and finishes on time.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

Decide how long you want to play and set the rounds to match. Ten rounds with a 15 second timer gives a fast game before dinner, while 20 rounds fills the hour before the countdown. The leaderboard after each round keeps people glued to the screen instead of their messages.

Pick a deck that covers a few decades, or the years your group looks back on at the end of the year. Players join on their own phone with a QR code, so late arrivals should join before the first song. When the podium is shown, stop the game, put on a proper playlist and let the evening go on.

Best way to play it Party room: Year Rush. Party room: Year Rush is the best fit because rounds are short and everyone guesses together, so the game ends on time and the room stays lively.

How a game works

  1. 1

    Pick a deck

Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.

  2. 2

    Choose how to play

Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.

  3. 3

    Listen and guess

A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.

  4. 4

    Reveal and score

Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

Tips for a better game

Plan the game to end early

Finish at least half an hour before midnight, so the countdown is not squeezed by a final round.

Show the code at the door

Guests who arrive later can join before the first song starts.

Use 15 seconds for a lively crowd

A short timer keeps the energy high when the group has been celebrating for hours.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.

Frequently asked questions

Can we keep playing after the podium?

Yes, but the room closes when the game ends, so the host opens a new room and the guests join again with the code.

How long does a game take?

It depends on the settings. With a short timer and 10 rounds it is a quick game, and with 20 rounds and a long timer it fills a good part of an evening.

What does it cost to play?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.

Do players need an account or an app?

No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.

Ready for the first song?

Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
