A music game for student societies and dorm parties
A common room, a laptop and twelve phones are all it takes. A Year Rush room turns the dorm kitchen into a loud, competitive music night without anyone buying a thing.
Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.
A society evening has two jobs: let new members meet each other, and give the regulars a reason to show up again. A music game does both. The newest first-year can win a round against the committee, because no one has a home advantage when the question is when a song came out.
It also costs nothing to start. Popular public decks are free to play, and the game runs in a browser on whatever laptop is in the room. A round lasts a minute, so it fits between announcements and the main event, and a 10-round game is over in about fifteen minutes.
Best way to play it Party room: Year Rush. Party room: Year Rush suits a society night: all players answer at once, and the leaderboard gives the house or the committee something to compete for.
How a game works
- 1
Pick a deck
Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.
- 2
Choose how to play
Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.
- 3
Listen and guess
A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.
- 4
Reveal and score
Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.
The timeline in one look
A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.
How to run it
Use the common room TV
Open hitify.app/host on a laptop connected to the screen and the speakers.
Play house against house
Let each house, committee or study group share a phone as a team. Year Rush has no player limit.
Run it as a recurring night
Pick a theme each week, such as a decade, and keep a running scoreboard on paper.
Tips for a better game
Pick a decade the members grew up in
Songs from the 2000s and 2010s are what many students know best.
Keep the pace high
A 15 second timer and 15 rounds is a loud, quick game.
Let a new member host
Whoever opens the room runs the game. It is an easy way to give a newcomer a visible role.
Why it works at a party
No cards needed
Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.
Works in the browser
No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.
Three ways to play
One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone have to log in?
No. Only the host logs in with an email code. The others scan a QR code or type the 4 letter code and pick a name.
What if the dorm Wi-Fi is bad?
Each phone needs a connection of its own, via Wi-Fi or mobile data, and the host device streams the previews. A stable connection at the host matters most.
What does it cost to play?
Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.
Do players need an account or an app?
No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.
Ready for the first song?
Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
