A music game for two, played on one phone
There is nothing to set up and nothing to print: sit next to each other, pass the phone back and forth and find out who really remembers the nineties. A game takes as long as you want it to.
Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.
With only two players the tokens matter more than in a big group. You each start with 2, and you can pay 1 to steal a card from the other or to skip a song you have no idea about. Naming title and artist earns a token, up to 5, so knowing a favourite album becomes a real advantage.
Pick a deck that belongs to you both: the songs from the year you met, a playlist from a road trip, or a decade neither of you was fully around for. Set a higher target of cards to win if you want an evening, and a lower one for a quick game before dinner. The phone lies between you, so every song is heard together.
Best way to play it Pass the phone. Pass the phone is the best fit because two people only need one phone, and the back and forth makes the game feel like a conversation.
How a game works
- 1
Pick a deck
Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.
- 2
Choose how to play
Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.
- 3
Listen and guess
A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.
- 4
Reveal and score
Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.
The timeline in one look
A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.
Tips for a better game
Play for something small
Loser cooks, or picks the next film. With two timelines on one phone, the score is easy to follow.
Use a playlist from your own history
Turn it into a deck and the first 100 cards are free. Hearing your own songs with a fresh question attached surprises you both.
Save skips for songs you do not know
A skip costs 1 token, so use it on a genre you cannot place instead of a song you only half know.
Why it works at a party
No cards needed
Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.
Works in the browser
No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.
Three ways to play
One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
Frequently asked questions
Does a game for two work as well as a bigger group?
Yes. Pass the phone works from 2 players, and tokens keep it tense even with just two timelines.
Do we both need to sign in?
No. Only the person who starts the game logs in with an email code. The other player just takes the phone when it is their turn.
What does it cost to play?
Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.
Do players need an account or an app?
No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.
Ready for the first song?
Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
