Music game for the occasion

A music game to play in the car, with the driver safely out of it

Long drives need a game that does not put a screen in the driver's face. One passenger holds the phone, everyone else calls out answers and the driver keeps their eyes on the road.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

The driver never touches the phone and never looks at it. A passenger holds it, starts each song and taps the spot on the timeline that the player calls out. The driver can still take part by calling out a guess when it is their turn, and the passenger enters it for them.

Set everything up before you set off, since you do not want to be signing in at a petrol station. Mobile data does the work on the road, so check that the phone has enough of it. Choose a low target of cards, around five, and play a few short games rather than one long one.

Best way to play it Pass the phone. Pass the phone is the best fit because it needs just one phone held by a passenger, with no big screen and no setup in a moving car.

How a game works

  1. 1

    Pick a deck

Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.

  2. 2

    Choose how to play

Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.

  3. 3

    Listen and guess

A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.

  4. 4

    Reveal and score

Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

Tips for a better game

Appoint a passenger as operator

They hold the phone, press play and enter everyone's guesses. The driver only answers out loud.

Choose the deck before you leave

Pick it while parked. A mixed playlist with everyone's favourites keeps the whole car in the game.

Turn the volume up

A 30 second preview is easy to miss over road noise. Keep the phone near the middle of the car so everybody hears.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.

Frequently asked questions

Can the driver play too?

Yes, by calling out a guess while a passenger holds the phone and enters it. The driver should never touch or look at the phone.

Does it work without Wi-Fi in the car?

It needs an internet connection, so mobile data on the phone does the job. Check that you have a signal before the game starts.

What does it cost to play?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.

Do players need an account or an app?

No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.

Ready for the first song?

Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
