Music game for your event

A conference energizer built on music

The post-lunch slot is where attention goes to die. A three song round on the big screen gets the room guessing, laughing and awake again, in less time than a coffee break.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

Year Rush has no player limit, so a whole workshop, breakout session or meetup can join, as long as everyone has a phone and a connection. In a large hall, check the venue Wi-Fi or mobile data first, and consider a stage round with volunteers while the rest of the hall follows the board.

The format fits an agenda because it is short and self-contained. The host chooses 10 rounds or fewer, and each round is one song with one answer from each player. You can stop after any reveal without leaving anything unfinished, which makes it easy to run over the time you have.

Best way to play it Party room: Year Rush. Party room: Year Rush works for a short energizer: one song, one answer from everyone at once, a leaderboard after each round.

How a game works

  1. 1

    Pick a deck

Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.

  2. 2

    Choose how to play

Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.

  3. 3

    Listen and guess

A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.

  4. 4

    Reveal and score

Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

How to run it

Run it from the speaker laptop

Open hitify.app/host on the presenter machine, pick a deck and the 15 second timer and show the join code on the main screen.

Let people join from their seats

Show the QR code on the main screen. Everyone with a phone joins from where they sit, and the rest follow the board and shout along.

Time-box with the round count

Set 10 rounds for about ten minutes. The podium at the end is a natural close.

Tips for a better game

Pick songs your audience knows

A deck of hits from the last decades works for an international crowd. Turn a playlist into a deck for a theme.

Put the QR code on a slide

Show the join code before the round starts so people can join while you introduce it.

Check the room audio

The songs play from the host device. Test the audio output on the venue sound system before the session.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
