A music game for remote and hybrid teams
One person shares the board on the call, everyone else joins on their own phone and guesses the year. No installs for the team, no break-out rooms, no waiting for turns.
Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.
Remote team games often turn into one person talking and nine people on mute. Here everybody has something to do at once: lock in a year on the phone while the song plays through the call. The phone is a controller, so you can keep the video call and the game side by side without switching tabs.
The host opens the room in a browser and shares that browser window, with its audio if your call tool offers that option. Team members in the office and at home join with the same code. A hybrid team can mix both: the people in the room watch the TV, the people at home watch the shared screen.
Best way to play it Party room: Year Rush. Party room: Year Rush is made for a call: every player answers at the same time on their own phone, so the game never waits for someone with a slow connection to take a turn.
How a game works
- 1
Pick a deck
Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.
- 2
Choose how to play
Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.
- 3
Listen and guess
A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.
- 4
Reveal and score
Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.
The timeline in one look
A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.
How to run it
Host in a browser tab
Open hitify.app/host on a laptop, pick a deck and the time limit, and share that tab on the call.
Share the sound too
The songs play on the host device. Tick the option to share computer audio, or the team will see the board but hear nothing.
Everyone joins by code
Players scan the QR code from the shared screen with their phone, or type the 4 letter code, and pick a name.
Tips for a better game
Use 30 seconds for a call
Audio over a call lags a little. A longer timer gives everyone time to hear the song and answer.
Test the audio first
Play one song with a colleague before the session starts to check that the shared sound comes through.
Keep the group easy to follow
Year Rush has no player limit, but on a call a group of about twenty is easier to follow. For a bigger department, split into two calls or let people join as pairs.
Why it works at a party
No cards needed
Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.
Works in the browser
No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.
Three ways to play
One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone need to be on the same network?
No. Each player connects over the internet from their own phone, wherever they are. The room code is the only thing they need.
Can I run it in a video call tool I already use?
Yes, any tool that lets you share a browser tab or screen works. The game is a web page, so there is nothing to install for the team.
What does it cost to play?
Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.
Do players need an account or an app?
No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.
Ready for the first song?
Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
