A pub music game where the noise does not matter
In a noisy pub nobody hears the quizmaster. Here the guesses go through the phones and the leaderboard lives on the screen, so it works at full volume.
Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.
A pub night needs a screen with a browser and speakers that can handle a song, so ask the bar before you promise a game. If the venue has no suitable screen, bring a laptop and connect it by HDMI. Customers need mobile data or the bar Wi-Fi, so check that as well.
Short rounds suit the pace of a pub, so choose 15 seconds and 10 rounds and let the table cheer between songs. The host can award 200 extra points for naming title and artist, which rewards the regular who knows every album. A table can share one phone, so a group of six sits together and still counts as one player.
Best way to play it Party room: Year Rush. Party room: Year Rush is the best fit because answers go through phones on a short timer, which works even when the room is too loud to talk.
How a game works
- 1
Pick a deck
Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.
- 2
Choose how to play
Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.
- 3
Listen and guess
A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.
- 4
Reveal and score
Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.
The timeline in one look
A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.
Tips for a better game
Ask before you plan
Check with the bar that you can use a screen, play sound on it and show the QR code. A quiet slot early in the evening works best.
Put the QR code on every table
Joining takes seconds if the code is nearby. The 4 letter code works for anyone who cannot scan.
Run several short games
Ten rounds is enough. Open a new room and play again, since rooms close after the game.
Why it works at a party
No cards needed
Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.
Works in the browser
No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.
Three ways to play
One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work in a noisy room?
Yes, because players tap their guess on the phone instead of shouting it. You only need the song to be loud enough to hear.
Does the pub need to supply Wi-Fi?
Every phone needs a connection, either the bar Wi-Fi or mobile data. The big screen needs one too, so check this with the bar first.
What does it cost to play?
Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.
Do players need an account or an app?
No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.
Ready for the first song?
Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
