Music game guide

A music quiz race: join on your phone, guess the year, closest and fastest win

If you know quiz games where a code puts every phone into one live game on a big screen, this works the same way. The question is always a song, and the answer is always a year.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

Year Rush is built for quiz energy. A song plays on the host screen, the timer starts and every phone shows a year picker where any year can be chosen. Closest guess scores most, and a speed bonus rewards the player who commits first.

The rules fit in one sentence, which is why it works with mixed groups. Nobody needs to know the band, because a year can be reasoned out from the sound.

What the race looks like

Each round is short and has a clear shape.

Song starts

The big screen plays up to 30 seconds of the song while a short countdown runs.

Everyone guesses

Players have 15, 20 or 30 seconds, chosen by the host, to lock in a year on their phone.

Reveal and scores

The real year appears, then each guess with its distance and points. A leaderboard shows between rounds.

Why accuracy beats pure speed

Exact years score 1000 and each step further out scores less, down to nothing beyond ten years. The speed bonus is at most 200 and only counts when the guess already earned accuracy points. A careful guess usually beats a fast random one.

There is also a 200 point bonus for naming title and artist, confirmed by the host, once per round.

Group size and joining

There is no player limit: everybody races at once. Everybody joins from a browser on a phone, tablet or laptop: scan the QR code or type the 4 letter PIN. There are no accounts to create and nothing to install.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

Tips for a better game

Pick 10 rounds for a first game

It is the default, and a good length to see whether the room wants another go.

Use 30 seconds for mixed crowds

A longer timer gives people who do not know the music time to reason about the year.

Finish with a podium

The game ends with a top three, which gives the winner a proper moment.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Popular public decks are free to play. Your own playlist deck is free for its first 100 cards.

Do players have to know the songs?

No. Placing a year close to the real one still scores, and the sound of a recording often gives away its era.

Can I use my own playlist?

Yes. You can turn your own playlist into a deck and play it in a party room.

What does it cost to play?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.

Do players need an account or an app?

No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.

Ready for the first song?

Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
