How to host a music quiz on your TV or projector

Any TV, projector or laptop with a browser can be the quiz screen. The host page shows the board and plays the songs, and everyone else plays on their own phone.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

You do not need a quiz master or a stack of questions. Open the host page, choose a deck and a mode, and the screen shows a QR code. Players scan it, pick a name and the game can start.

The songs come out of whatever the screen is connected to, so a TV soundbar or a speaker on the laptop does the work. Put the screen where everyone can see it and hear it.

What you need

The list is short.

A big screen with a browser

A smart TV browser, a laptop connected by HDMI or a tablet all work. The host page needs a wide screen.

Sound

The song plays through the host screen, so use a TV, a soundbar or a speaker connected to the laptop.

A phone per player

Players use their own phone as the controller. Nobody needs an account.

Getting the page on the TV

The simplest route is a laptop with an HDMI cable: connect it, open hitify.app/host and show it full screen. If your TV has a web browser you can open the page directly, and screen mirroring from a laptop or tablet also works. Pick whichever you already use for streaming.

Whoever starts the game signs in with an email code, no password. Popular public decks are free to play.

How players join

The screen shows a QR code and a 4 letter room code. Players scan the QR code with a phone camera, or open the join page in any browser and type the code. They choose a name of up to 16 characters and wait in the lobby until you press start.

Timeline takes 2 to 8 players. Year Rush and Timeline for everyone at once have no player limit. The host can switch Auto on, so the game moves on by itself, or pause it at any time.

Step by step

  1. 1

Show the host page on the big screen

Open hitify.app/host on the TV, projector or laptop and sign in with an email code.

  2. 2

Choose a deck and a mode

Pick a public deck, then Timeline for turns, or Year Rush or Timeline for everyone at once so that everybody plays at the same time.

  3. 3

    Let players join

They scan the QR code or type the 4 letter PIN and pick a name.

  4. 4

    Press start

The songs play through the screen and the phones become the controllers.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

Tips for a better game

Test the sound first

Start a room and listen before guests arrive, so the volume is right and the fragment is clear at the back.

Pick the mode for the crowd

Timeline suits 2 to 8 people who like to take turns, and Year Rush or Timeline for everyone at once suit a bigger, louder group.

Show the code until all are in

Keep the lobby on screen so latecomers can scan and join before the first song.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a smart TV?

No. A laptop or tablet connected to any screen works, as long as the page is shown on a wide screen.

Can the TV be the only screen and my phone the player?

Yes. The TV shows the board and plays the sound while each player uses their own phone to guess or place songs.

Do guests have to install anything?

No. They scan the QR code, or open the join page and type the code, and play in the browser.

What does it cost to play?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.

Do players need an account or an app?

No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.

Ready for the first song?

Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
