Complete guide

Higher or lower: was this song released before or after?

A year appears on screen and a song plays. Was it released before that year or after it? Tap your answer on your own phone, fast. The easiest game to explain, and it works for any size of crowd.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

Higher or lower needs no music knowledge to start: you only decide between two options. A year, say 1987, is shown, the song plays, and every player taps Before or After on their own phone before the clock runs out.

The year shown is never the year of the song, so there is always a right answer. It is quick, family friendly, and because everybody answers at the same time there is no waiting for a turn.

How a round works

Every round is a few seconds of listening and a tap.

See the year

After a short countdown the year appears on the big screen and on every phone, and the song starts.

Tap Before or After

Is the song older or newer than the year shown? Your first tap counts and cannot be changed.

Reveal

The screen shows the real year, how many players chose each side and the share who got it right.

Next song

Points land, the scoreboard moves and the next year and song follow, until the last round and the podium.

Levels and scoring

The host picks a level. On easy the year shown is 10 to 30 years away from the song, on normal 4 to 12 years, and on hard only 1 to 4 years, which is a real test. Sometimes the year shown is the year of another song from the same deck.

A right answer scores 1000, plus up to 300 for speed, which fades over the first half of the clock, plus 50 for every extra right answer in a row, up to 250. A wrong or missing answer scores nothing and ends your streak.

Settings and big rooms

The host chooses the rounds and a clock of 10, 15, 20 or 30 seconds, and can turn Auto on so the game moves on by itself. There is no player limit, so a whole class, club or party can join with the QR code or the 4 letter PIN.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

Tips for a better game

Start on easy with kids

A gap of 10 years or more can be heard in the sound of a song, which makes it a good first game.

Trust your gut

Only your first tap counts and speed adds points, so do not wait for the last second.

Go hard for fans

On hard the year is within 4 years of the song, and only real fans stay ahead.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.

Frequently asked questions

What if the year shown matches the year of the song?

That never happens. The year shown is always different from the year of the song.

How many players can join?

There is no player limit, so it suits a classroom or a big party.

Do I need to know a lot about music?

No. With two options, even a guess is right half the time, and the easy level is made for beginners.

What does it cost to play?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.

Do players need an account or an app?

No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.

Ready for the first song?

Pick a deck, choose how you want to play and have the first round running within a minute.
