Rock music quiz: place the riffs on a timeline
From classic rock anthems to indie guitars: recognise the riff, then decide when it was recorded.

Rock is a genre of eras: blues rock, prog, punk, grunge, indie. Each has its own guitar tone and recording style, so the year can be heard if you know what to listen for.
The trap is the classics that never left the radio. A song from 1973 can sound as present as one from 1993, and the timeline punishes lazy assumptions.
How it works
- 1
Log in with a code
Enter your email address and type the code we send you. No password, no app.
- 2
Pick a deck
Choose a popular deck, one of your own, or scan the QR code of a deck you have.
- 3
Add the players
Add everyone who plays and choose how many cards are needed to win. One phone is enough.
- 4
Listen and place
Hear a 30 second preview and place the song on your timeline. Right answers grow your timeline, the first to fill it wins.
The timeline in one look
Every player builds a timeline of songs in release order. You never see the year of the new song: you listen, then decide where it fits between the songs you already placed.
Tips for this game
Listen to the guitar tone
Warm, clean tones are older, thick distortion is later. Overdriven and compressed means 90s or later.
Spot the drum sound
Roomy live drums point to the 70s, tight and dry drums to the 90s and 2000s.
Add a few metal tracks
Heavier songs are easier to place by subgenre and give experts a way to shine.
What you get
One phone, whole group
The phone goes from hand to hand. Nobody needs their own device or an account.
Real music
Songs play as 30 second previews, enough to recognise a chorus and argue about the year.
Free decks to start
Popular public decks are free to play. Want your own songs? Turn any playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards are free.
Prefer real cards?
The same game also exists on printed cards with a QR code on every card. See how that works for this subject.
Frequently asked questions
Can I limit the deck to guitar music?
Yes. Build a deck from a rock playlist and every card will be in that style.
Does it include metal and punk?
A deck holds whatever songs you add, so any rock subgenre works.
Do I need to install an app?
No. The game runs in your phone browser. You only log in with a code sent to your email address.
Can we play together on different phones?
Not yet. The game is made for one phone that the group passes around, the way you would pass a stack of cards.
