Hip-hop moves in very audible steps: sampled breakbeats, g-funk synths, glossy 2000s production and, later, trap hi-hats. You do not need to know the rapper to know the decade.
It is a great genre for hearing differences. The tempo, the drum machine and the flow have all changed in clear ways, and the timeline rewards players who listen closely.
How it works
- 1
Log in with a code
Enter your email address and type the code we send you. No password, no app.
- 2
Pick a deck
Choose a popular deck, one of your own, or scan the QR code of a deck you have.
- 3
Add the players
Add everyone who plays and choose how many cards are needed to win. One phone is enough.
- 4
Listen and place
Hear a 30 second preview and place the song on your timeline. Right answers grow your timeline, the first to fill it wins.
The timeline in one look
Every player builds a timeline of songs in release order. You never see the year of the new song: you listen, then decide where it fits between the songs you already placed.
Tips for this game
Follow the drums
Dusty breakbeats are the 90s, 808s with rolling hi-hats are the 2010s and later.
Listen to the flow
Fast, triplet-heavy flows come from the middle 2010s. Slower, punchline-driven flows are older.
Include a few features
Guest verses date a track fast if you know when the guest was at their peak.
What you get
One phone, whole group
The phone goes from hand to hand. Nobody needs their own device or an account.
Real music
Songs play as 30 second previews, enough to recognise a chorus and argue about the year.
Free decks to start
Popular public decks are free to play. Want your own songs? Turn any playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards are free.
Prefer real cards?
The same game also exists on printed cards with a QR code on every card. See how that works for this subject.
Frequently asked questions
Are the lyrics shown?
No, you only hear the preview and place the song on your timeline.
Can I mix hip-hop and R&B?
Yes, build a deck from a playlist that mixes them. The decade clues are similar in both.
Do I need to install an app?
No. The game runs in your phone browser. You only log in with a code sent to your email address.
Can we play together on different phones?
Not yet. The game is made for one phone that the group passes around, the way you would pass a stack of cards.
