Why a hip-hop deck

Hip-hop as a party game

Great for hip-hop fans and parties

A deck full of classics gets the argument started: who knows the beats, who guesses the right year. Old school against the new wave, and everyone has an opinion.

Guess the year

Players guess the release year and place each card in the right spot on the timeline. A 90s boom-bap track feels nothing like modern trap.

Mix with the original Hitster

Our cards share the format and QR style of the original Hitster game: add your hip-hop deck to an existing set or play it as a standalone pack.

Your own picks

No fixed list. You decide whether it stays pure old school, pays tribute to the golden age, or mixes all the way up to the newest releases.

Tips & inspiration

Building a hip-hop deck

A good hip-hop deck follows the genre's evolution. Start with the old school and electro of the early 80s, bring in the golden age and boom-bap of the 90s, add the southern crunk and club hits of the 2000s, then finish with trap and modern rap. Choosing broadly keeps "guess the year" tricky: the production often gives away the era, but the exact year is still a guess.

Keep it around 50 to 80 cards for a party that flows. Drop in a few deep cuts to make even the real heads hesitate. Ready to build? Start the cards, or first read how to make your own Hitster cards.

Very easy-to-use app. I especially like that you can submit a correction for the year, and if it's right it gets applied straight away. The different ways to vary the printout are great too. Highly recommended!

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many hip-hop songs should I pick?

For a party game, 50 to 80 cards works best. Want a big timeline from old school to now? You can make up to 1000 cards.

How does "guess the year" work?

Players scan the QR code, listen to the hip-hop hit and guess the release year. The card is placed in the right spot on the timeline. Exactly like in the original Hitster.

Does it work with the original Hitster?

Yes. Our cards share the same format and QR codes that play directly, so you can mix your hip-hop deck with an existing Hitster set or play it as a standalone pack.

Are the years of the hip-hop hits accurate?

Yes. We verify every release year via MusicBrainz and ISRC, so your timeline is always right. No mistakes like hand-made lists.
