Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2026: free music in Golden Gate Park
From Friday October 2 to Sunday October 4, 2026, the meadows of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco turn into one of the most generous festivals in the world. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass costs nothing. No tickets, no wristbands, no sponsor tents. You bring a blanket, find a patch of grass under the eucalyptus trees and wander from stage to stage all weekend.
The festival was started in 2001 by Warren Hellman, a San Francisco investor who played the banjo and wanted to give the city a party. He endowed it so it could stay free after he was gone, and it has. The "hardly strictly" part is a wink: there is plenty of banjo and fiddle, but also soul, rock, folk and Tex-Mex. This year's bill includes Emmylou Harris, a regular since the very first edition, plus Mavis Staples, Los Lobos, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Molly Tuttle and My Morning Jacket. On Thursday night a tribute concert for Steve Earle opens the weekend at The Masonic.
What is Hitster?
Hitster is the party game where every card hides a song behind a QR code. You scan it, listen, and place the card on your timeline by release year. Get the order right and the card is yours. The first player with ten cards wins.
Most people play it with pop hits. That makes roots music a lovely twist, because these songs sound timeless on purpose. A banjo tune can feel a hundred years old and turn out to be from 2004.

"La Bamba" by Los Lobos sounds like the 1950s because Ritchie Valens recorded it in 1958, but the Los Lobos hit is from 1987. And plenty of people will swear "Wagon Wheel" is an old country standard.
