Desertfest Belgium 2026: three days of heavy riffs

From October 16 to 18, 2026 the amps go up to eleven again at Desertfest Belgium. This year the festival moves from Antwerp to the OM venue on the edge of Liège. It stays what it always was: an indoor club festival for stoner, doom, psych and sludge, with a crowd that knows exactly which riff belongs to which year.

The 2026 bill includes Sólstafir, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, 1000mods, Ufomammut, Monolord and Boris. The common thread is the sound that began with Black Sabbath in 1970 and was reinvented in the Californian desert in the nineties by Kyuss.

What is Hitster?

Hitster is the card game where every card has a QR code that plays a song, and you guess the year it came out. Place the card correctly on your timeline and you keep it. First to enough cards wins. Heavy guitar music makes it extra hard: does that fuzz sound like 1971 or 1998?

A starter list of eleven songs that fit Desertfest, from the source to the modern sound:

  • Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970): the song that invented doom and heavy metal
  • Black Sabbath - Sweet Leaf (1971): an ode to weed and the blueprint for stoner
  • Kyuss - Green Machine (1992): the desert riff a whole genre points to
  • Fu Manchu - Evil Eye (1997): fuzzy surf rock from Southern California
  • Monster Magnet - Space Lord (1998): psychedelic space rock with an unforgettable chorus
  • Queens of the Stone Age - Feel Good Hit of the Summer (2000): the summer hit for people who like it loud
  • Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows (2002): the biggest hit of the desert scene
  • Boris - Farewell (2005): Japanese drone and doom in an almost gentle coat
  • Sólstafir - Fjara (2011): Icelandic post-metal, one of this year's Desertfest headliners
  • Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Pusher Man (2013): retro doom with a Beatles melody under the fuzz
  • Monolord - Rust (2015): Swedish doom, low, slow and crushing
  • Eleven cards are a warm-up. Add Sleep, Electric Wizard, Ufomammut and Yawning Man and you have an evening of arguing about years.
